There are two sides to the same coin.

In reality, traveling does not have to be expensive and if you live in expensive countries like Brazil, the United States and Europe, traveling is cheaper.
In addition, there are still very cheap countries in the world to travel to, destinations in Southeast Asia probably come immediately to mind.
Depending on where you live, you will spend less than you actually spend on your day to day.

However, one of the most effective is choosing a cheaper country, which is a good start.
However, cheap is a very relative concept and depends a lot on your travel style.
Since we are talking about cheap, I will not talk about luxury trips, as they have an expense beyond any idea of cheap.
To make it easier to understand what I am talking about, I will define the prices for a person traveling alone and a parameter of what a cheaper trip is like on two levels.
Backpacker
A backpacker is someone who explores the world independently, on a tighter budget, carrying only a backpack with the essentials.
Backpackers generally seek authentic experiences, avoiding traditional tourist routes, preferring to explore cheaper and more unusual destinations.
Here are some characteristics that define this type of traveler:
- Low budget: They prefer cheap, simple accommodations, such as hostels, campsites or even couchsurfing, and save on food and transportation.
- Mobility: Since they travel with a backpack, they are always ready to move around easily and quickly.
- Cultural experiences: The focus is on experiencing the local culture, often choosing to interact with locals, try typical cuisine and visit less touristy and cheaper places.
- Adventurous spirit: Backpackers are flexible and open to changes in plans, since they do not follow a rigid itinerary.
- Sustainability: Generally, backpackers have a more sustainable approach, seeking practices that respect the environment.
Intermediate traveler
An intermediate traveler is someone who seeks a balance between comfort and economy during their travels.
They are not as minimalist as a backpacker, but they do not opt for luxury trips either. They prefer good experiences without going over their budget.
Here are some characteristics of an intermediate traveler:
- Moderate comfort: They opt for quality accommodations, such as comfortable but still affordable hotels or guesthouses. They do not seek luxury or the cheapest, but they value basic amenities.
- Flexible planning: The intermediate traveler usually does some planning, but does not follow a rigid itinerary. They like to explore freely, but with a plan in mind to optimize the trip.
- Balanced budget: They spend more than a backpacker, but are cost-conscious. They prefer to spend on experiences, such as guided tours, tourist attractions, and meals in good restaurants, without splurging.
- Efficient transportation: They opt for more comfortable flights, trains or buses, but do not hesitate to use public transportation or rent a car, if it is cheaper, practical and better value for money.
- Search for good experiences: This type of traveler values authentic and cultural experiences, but without giving up a little comfort. They explore the destination in a more balanced way, visiting popular tourist spots, but also seeking out less obvious places.
Here are some things to watch out for.
Airfare: Obviously, the cost of airfare will influence the total cost of your trip, but planning and payment options will help keep the cost lower.
For reference purposes only, I will use the average round-trip airfare, always starting from the city of São Paulo, Brazil.
Documentation and Vaccinations: It is important for each traveler to observe the rules and requirements for documents and vaccinations for each country they wish to travel to.
Insurance: Do not leave home without insurance. Not having insurance can turn your trip into a huge financial nightmare.
Cheapest countries to travel to in the Americas
Due to the distance and the location of neighboring countries, many of them are very cheap for Brazilians, but also for Europeans and North Americans.

Guatemala
Guatemala is a country rich in history and culture. It is famous for its mountainous landscapes, active volcanoes and tropical rainforests.

Costa Rica

Peru
For me, Peru is one of the best countries in the Americas to travel to.
It has an abundance of nature, culture, food and a warm climate, stunning coastlines, vast deserts, picturesque mountains and even part of the Amazon rainforest.

It is also the birthplace of many important civilizations, such as the Inca, with one of its best-known monuments, Machu Picchu.
For the adventurous, there is much to see, from the plains in the south, the Nazca line to the great mountains in Huaraz and the Cordillera Blanca.
We also have Cuzco, Arequipa, Lima, Lake Titicaca and many other places.

Bolivia
There is no doubt that Bolivia is a cheap destination, but it is important to know that it is one of the ones with the least infrastructure.
Since most of its territory is located high in the Andes, everything is more difficult and scary for those who are used to good things.
It starts when you arrive at La Paz airport, El Alto International Airport.
It is located at an altitude of 4,061 meters, which offers a unique experience due to the atmospheric conditions.
Right after is LA PAZ, which is located in a deep valley, surrounded by majestic mountains, at an altitude that varies between 3,200 and 4,100 meters, at first glance it looks like a large slum.
And so it goes on with dramatic landscapes of the isolated archaeological ruins of Tiwanaku, Lake Titicaca and the impressive Uyuni salt flats, among many others.
It is important to be careful with the cheapest transport, as some are illegal and the vehicles are poorly maintained.

Colombia is not the cheapest country in South America, but it is worth it, as it is full of beauty, from the lush countryside full of coffee plantations, mountains to the Caribbean coast.

Bogotá:
It is the capital of Colombia and the largest city in the country. Located at an altitude of 2,640 meters, it is surrounded by the Andes mountains. Bogotá is a cultural and political center, known for museums such as the Gold Museum and the Botero Museum. Its diversity of neighborhoods, such as the historic La Candelaria and the modern Zona Rosa, reflect a rich mix of tradition and modernity.
Medellin:
Known as the “City of Eternal Spring”, it stands out for its pleasant climate and mountainous landscapes.
It is famous for its cable car system, which connects the favelas to the center, and for its vibrant cultural scene. Events such as the Flower Fair and the Comuna 13 neighborhood are not to be missed.
Cartagena:

In addition, the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas and the Rosario Islands attract visitors for their history and crystal-clear waters.
In the main cities, you can only go about 6 blocks from the tourist attractions and the prices will be much cheaper.

Mexico

The most spectacular attraction is Chichén Itzá, one of the seven wonders of the modern world.
In the south, we have Oaxaca, with its famous cuisine, markets and the archaeological site of Monte Albán.

Argentina is going through a major economic crisis and it has been depressing to visit the country lately, due to the shortage of everything.
However, it is a country of incredible contrasts, where you can experience everything from a cosmopolitan pace to stunning natural landscapes.
If you arrive with currency, dollars or euros, your trip will be around 50% cheaper due to the black market exchange rate.
For meat and wine lovers, it is a paradise, as you can eat the best meat and the best wine very cheaply.
Buenos Aires, although it has lost much of its charm, is still captivating with its wide avenues, charming cafes and the iconic San Telmo neighborhood, full of tango and history.
Mendoza, to the north, where you can explore renowned wineries and taste wines, especially the famous Malbec, while enjoying the views of the Andes mountains and the iconic Aconcagua (the highest mountain after the Himalayas).
For adventure lovers, Bariloche, with its crystal clear lakes and outdoor sports options, such as skiing in winter and hiking in summer. For an even wilder experience, head to Patagonia.

Ecuador is one of the least known countries in South America, but it has a lot to offer.

For a spectacular view of the city and the Andes, just take the cable car up to the Pichincha volcano.
The Otavalo Market is another highlight, where you can buy local handicrafts and experience the authenticity of indigenous culture.
The Avenue of Volcanoes, with its approximately 30 peaks, is part of the Andean Volcanic Belt, one of the regions that form the feared Pacific Ring of Fire.
Along the way, you can explore the impressive Cotopaxi, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world.
For those who enjoy adventure, hiking and climbing are a must.
Ecuador offers encounters with the Amazon rainforest, such as the Yasuni National Park, as well as peaceful beaches like Montanita, famous for surfing.
But the best known are the Galapagos Islands, which unfortunately cannot be visited cheaply.

Although the flight from Brazil to Asia is not cheap, the cost within the countries is so cheap that it makes up for the cost of the tickets.

Thailand
For me, Thailand, when traveling, is one of the best expressions of good and cheap.
Because it has a predominantly tropical climate, it has many fruits and foods that we find in Brazil, as well as many others specific to the region.
It has one of the best tourism infrastructures in the world, whatever you want is possible.
You can travel as simply and cheaply as you want, or with the greatest possible luxuries.
All this at much lower prices than other countries.
A trip to Thailand is an immersion in culture, nature and spirituality.
Starting with the chaotic and exciting Bangkok, with its golden temples, such as Wat Phra Kaew, the Grand Palace and Wat Arun, and the floating markets, the city offers a mix of tradition and modernity.
To the north, where cities like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are famous for their Buddhist temples and mountainous landscapes.
In the south, the paradisiacal beaches of Phuket, Krabi and the Phi Phi Islands enchant with their crystal clear waters and marine life.
For the more adventurous, forest trails, boat trips and diving are a must.
And I can’t forget to mention the hospitality of the Thai people, which completes the experience, making Thailand an unforgettable destination.

Vietnam was a pleasant surprise for me, as it is not only one of the cheapest countries in the region, but also one of the most beautiful, captivating and cultural in all of Southeast Asia.
Even with the madness of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, the beauty of the rest of the country more than makes up for the chaotic moments.
In the far south, the Mekong Delta, where you can sail along rivers and floating markets.
Then, you can pass through the vibrant Ho Chi Minh City, with its lively nightlife and the history of the Vietnam War.
For a bit of relaxation, there is nothing better than the beaches of Nha Trang.
Hoi An, a charming coastal city famous for its well-preserved architecture and colorful lanterns.
Hanoi, the capital, where you can explore the Old Quarter and taste the famous pho at one of the many street stalls with an incredible variety of very cheap food.
A must-see is Ha Long Bay, with its limestone islands and green waters, ideal for boat trips.
If you get tired of the hustle and bustle, the ideal place to head to Sapa, a small town nestled in the mountains to the north.
Of course, during your trip, you can’t miss the vibrant and fresh Vietnamese cuisine, characterized by the use of aromatic herbs, vegetables and seafood.
Iconic dishes include pho (noodle soup), banh mi (baguette sandwich) and spring rolls.
The balance between sweet, salty, sour and spicy flavors is essential.

India is one of those places that you either love or leave, you can’t leave without taking with you a lot of good and bad impressions.
Your beliefs will be confronted with the reality of the country.
Cities like Delhi and Mumbai offer a mix of history, mysticism and modernity, with their ancient temples and modern skyscrapers.
Everything is very cheap, but tourists have to be careful, as we are not used to the Indian lifestyle.
The Taj Mahal, in Agra, is one of the 7 wonders of the modern world, and its beauty and grandeur are breathtaking.
In Rajasthan, palaces and fortresses evoke the era of the maharajas.
However, Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganges River, provides an intense spiritual experience, with religious ceremonies taking place at sunset.

The city hosts the International Yoga Festival, among other events.
The food is a feast of flavors, with spices unique to each region.
I can say that traveling to India is not for the faint of heart.
However, getting lost in colorful markets, connecting with hospitable people and immersing yourself in a culture rich in ancient traditions, always with something new to discover around every corner, is well worth the experience.

Nepal

Indonesia
Indonesia is an incredible mix of culture, nature and tropical adventures.

When we think of Poland, we immediately think of World War II and its horrors, but the country is full of more beautiful stories, vibrant culture and diverse landscapes.

For those who like the beach, there is the Agrave region, for surfers there are the giant waves of Nazaré.
