Italy: A brief history

The most important thing we know in Italian history is Rome.

Rome began in 753 BC, forming a republic in 509 BC. The Roman Republic unified and led the federation of the Italic peoples that dominated Western Europe, North Africa and the Near East.

After the fall of Rome in AD 476, Italy remained fragmented in several city-states until in 1861 the new Kingdom of Italy was established.

It had a great participation in the first and second great wars.

After the second war, Italy started a period of prosperity and founded the European Union, NATO and the Group of Six (later G7 and G20).

It remains a strong economic, cultural, military and political factor in the 21st century.

Italy is a country in central and southern Europe, occupying a peninsula that protrudes into the Mediterranean Sea.

Bologna

Now that I had been as far north as possible I came to Italy, the most southern of Europe, to return to the north again by land, so I took a plane to Bologna.

Bologna is a vibrant city, like a lot of history. Each building has a history of hundreds of years.

The world’s first university was founded here in 1088.

Italy is known for its food and good wines, that is, a prediction.

It is impossible to walk around the city without stopping for cheese, sausages and wine, as well as ice cream.

I went to visit Florence, which is an hour away by train.

After a few days and the batteries recharged from Brazil, it’s time to head north. Next stop Vienna.

My special thanks to my friend Milton, Ruth, Heitor and Tião (the dog) too.

Florence

Florence has history since the Romans, there are very old buildings.

It has gone through countless wars and invasions and has a diverse architecture, important churches like Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, Basilica di San Lorenzo, Florence Cathedral and many others like Ponte Vecchio, Piazza del Duomo.

You need several days to be able to see everything.

You can basically walk around the city, as the main attractions are all close by.

I walked all day and now it’s time to go back to Bologna.

Now it’s time to go north: Austria
